Jewellery Photography – Behind the scenes
Every day we are kept on our toes with the diversity of clients that come through our doors. Today was no exception, especially when it comes to tiny products! Jewellery photography is particularly challenging. Probably one of the most challenging types of photography a person can do. Once you’ve finally worked out how to get rid of all the reflections and how to make those diamonds sparkle, you’re brain is scrambled and you’re ready for bed! You’d be surprised at the amount of time and effort that goes into jewellery photography, not only during the photoshoot but afterwards in post-production too.
Achieving the perfect lighting to make those diamonds sparkle is key to success. It’s a serious challenge to try to minimise those pesky reflections. Since the jewellery is so reflective and usually convex in shape means that everything from the floor to the ceiling reflect! The hardest things to remove is of course the camera!!! We are often forced to shoot through a hole in a piece of paper or a piece of card but even then, the hole can still be seen. That’s when we rely on the skills of our experienced product retouchers.
Our newest recruit is Arthur our French photography graduate. He was given the challenge of creating the perfect diamond ring for local retailer Warren James. He did a combination of video and photography with several different lighting scenarios, which were set up to catch every glistening cut in the diamond. With macro jewellery photography, every care has to be taken to ensure there’s no dust or finger prints. Although photoshop can do this of course, keeping the jewellery clean can prevent hours of tedious, unnecessary post-production.
